In metallurgy, stainless steel, also known as inox steel or inox from French “inoxydable”, is a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5% to 11% chromium content by mass. Stainless steel does not readily corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does, but despite the name it is not fully stain-proof, most notably under low oxygen, high salinity, or poor circulation environments.
Stainless steel is a great material to use in coffee makers because of its aesthetics and its resistance to corrosion. Many coffee maker casings are made of stainless steel, but this increases the production costs, which will be reflected in the retail price. Some coffee drippers and mesh filters are also made from stainless steel.
