Kalita

Coffee Company

Kalita are a Japanese coffee equipment company that specialize in drip coffee appliances.

They were first established in 1958 in Tokyo.

They are perhaps most famous for the Kalita Wave, which is a type of manual pour over coffee maker akin to the Hario V60 or the Chemex.

Kalita made the Wave series to perfect pour over coffee extraction. To do this they took the classic cone shaped brewers that can be made from stainless steel, ceramic or glass. Then Kalita added three holes at the bottom compared to other brewers such as the Hario V60, which has only one. These three holes disperse the water flow and aid in an even extraction.

Another design innovation from Kalita are the Kalita wave filters which have a distinctive wave design that give the Kalita Wave its name. These filters were designed by Kalita for optimum and easy coffee extraction. The wave design keeps the coffee grinds away from the walls of the cone. This means that the coffee is uniformly in contact with the water and the extraction is more even.

Apart from the Kalita Wave series, Kalita also produces regular coffee drippers, drip pots, decanters, coffee mills, Dutch Coffee Brewers and other accessories.
